Steel Casting

Steel casting is a specific type of casting which uses various types of steel. Alloy steel, carbon steel. And stainless steel is the three main categories of materials used in steel castings.

Steel castings are used for important parts in the mining, railroad, automobile, construction, and military industries, as well as the oil and gas business.

Why Steel Casting?

The steel casting process makes your product designed and flexible in dimensions which is not possible in any other manufacturing process. Steel casting manufactures a product by melting steel ingots into liquid form and pouring the liquid into a ceramic shell mold. It allows the casting of products into shapes that are not possible with other manufacturing processes. Industries are dependable on steel casting due to its reliability and strength. They are using this steel casting method for food processing, electronics, and oil and gas. Steel casting is used when iron casting can not deliver enough strength. The mining, railroad, construction, drilling, and transportation sectors are some typical end-users of steel castings. Gears, valve bodies, pump castings, agricultural wear parts, marine equipment parts, engine cylinder blockers, railroad truck frames, and other items are some common examples of steel-casting products.

Benefits of Steel Casting over Steel Forging

There are several industries that use steel casting. Steel casting is better than steel forging. It is easy to get a complex shape by steel casting which is quite tough by steel forging. Based on the chemical composition, steel casting can produce parts. Steel casting is also used for small-scale production. There are numerous benefits to using steel casting rather than steel forging such as,

  • Design flexibility
  • Metallurgical versatility
  • Reliability & economic
  • Weight flexibility benefits

Design flexibility

You can make the most complicated and distinctive shapes, styles, and forms as per your requirements by using steel casting.

For every business that needs unique and long-lasting castings, cast steels are ideal because of their flexibility.

Metallurgical versatility

Steel casting has the strongest metallurgical adaptability and variability, which is the second benefit. We can pick numerous organizational controls and material compositions to adapt them to various design requirements. Modern steel casting design flexibility and technological excellence are reflected by the best shape and quality, and the strongest overall structural qualities.

Reliability & economic benefits

The total structural strength of steel castings and isotropic steel materials boosts engineering reliability. Steel castings provide a competitive advantage in pricing and economic productivity when paired with the design to reduce weight and speed up delivery.

Weight flexibility

The fourth benefit is that steel casting weight can be altered over a wide range. Precision casting is extremely light, weighing only a few tens of grams, while big steel castings might weigh several tonnes, several dozen tonnes, or even hundreds of tonnes. There are lots of Steel castings advantages that make them popular across a wide range of industries, including construction, energy, maritime, transportation, etc.

Cast steel’s properties

Toughness

Pressure can be endured by cast steel. One can alloy metals and use heat to change the toughness of cast steels.

  • Hardness

There is no roughness in steel casting. Due to its extreme toughness, even scratches won’t be visible in the finished product.

  • Strength

Steel cast is tough to bend physically. This shows its power.

  • Wear Resistant

This makes it possible for the material to be corrosion-resistant. Cast steels have excellent resistance to elements that can cause damage despite being in regular use.

  • Adaptability

This is where cast steels have an advantage over other castings. It can be welded to create the necessary shapes and forms without suffering any damage.

Chemical Composition of Cast Steel

Carbon cast steel and alloy cast steel are the two main divisions of cast steel.
  • CARBON CAST STEEL
Carbon-cast steels can be categorized based on carbon content, just like iron-cast steels. Cast steel with a carbon content of 0.2% or less is relatively brittle and difficult to heat treat. Cast steel with a medium carbon content (between 0.2% and 0.5% carbon) is slightly tougher and can be strengthened through heat treatment. High-carbon, carbon-coated cast steel (0.5% carbon) is employed when the highest degree of toughness and wear resistance are required.
  • ALLOYED CAST STEEL
There are two types of alloyed cast steel: low- and high-alloy. While having better hardenability, low-alloy cast steel ( 8% alloy content) performs similarly to regular carbon steel. A specific quality, such as stainless steels, high hardness, or high hardness, is produced using high-alloy cast steel (> 8% alloy content). Hadfield’s manganese steel (11–15% manganese) and stainless steel (> 10.5% chromium) are two common high-alloy steels.
